AVIF vs BMP: what changes when you convert
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) was introduced in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media (Google, Netflix, Mozilla) and is best known for maximum web compression — typically 50% smaller than jpg. BMP (Bitmap Image File), created by Microsoft, is the better choice when you need legacy windows applications.
Why convert? BMP files are usually larger than AVIF, but you gain legacy windows applications. Most desktop image editors and older devices cannot open AVIF yet. Converting to BMP solves that instantly. note that AVIF transparency is not supported in BMP — transparent areas are filled with a white background.
