Why pages end up sideways

Scanners feed pages in whatever orientation the paper entered; phone cameras guess wrong about landscape documents; and mixed-orientation originals (portrait letters plus landscape spreadsheets) confuse every automated pipeline. The result is the most common minor defect in the document world: a PDF you have to read with your head tilted.
