PSD vs WEBP: what changes when you convert

PSD (Photoshop Document) was introduced in 1990 by Adobe and is best known for layered design work in progress. WEBP (WebP), created by Google, is the better choice when you need website images — smaller than jpg and png at the same quality.

Why convert? WEBP files are typically much smaller than PSD — expect a noticeable reduction in file size. A PSD sent to someone without Photoshop usually cannot be opened at all. Converting to WEBP solves that instantly.

PurePDF uses the flattened image Photoshop saves inside every compatible PSD, so the WEBP looks the way the document did when it was last saved — all visible layers, effects, and text included. CMYK print files and documents with an embedded colour profile are converted to standard sRGB through that profile, so colours do not shift.

  • Speed up your website — WEBP cuts image weight without visible quality loss
  • Standardize mixed image libraries on WEBP for consistent tooling

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Quick answers about this PurePDF workflow.

How do I convert PSD to WEBP?

Upload your PSD files on this page. PurePDF opens the conversion workspace with WEBP preselected — click Convert and collect the finished files from the download hub.

Will converting PSD to WEBP reduce quality?

No. WEBP supports lossless compression, so every pixel of your PSD image is preserved exactly.

Is transparency preserved when converting PSD to WEBP?

Yes. Both PSD and WEBP support alpha transparency, so transparent backgrounds survive the conversion intact.

Do I need Photoshop to convert a PSD?

No. Upload the PSD here and download a WEBP. The flattened image is read straight from the file, so nothing needs to be installed.

Are layers kept?

WEBP is a single-layer format, so you get the finished, flattened design with every visible layer merged — exactly as it looked when saved in Photoshop.

Why does my PSD say it was saved without a flattened image?

Photoshop only stores the flattened image when "Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility" is on. If it was off, ask the sender to save the file again with that option set to Always, or to export a PNG.

Will CMYK colours look right?

Yes. CMYK files and files with an embedded colour profile are converted to sRGB through that profile, rather than by the simple formula many free converters use, which makes print colours look harsh or shifted.

How large can the PSD be?

Up to 100MB per file and 64 megapixels (for example 8000 × 8000 pixels). PSB large-document files are not supported; save a copy as PSD from Photoshop.

How much smaller will my file be as WEBP?

It depends on the image content, but WEBP typically produces significantly smaller files than PSD. Photographic images see the biggest savings.

Is the PSD to WEBP converter free?

Yes — free with no signup, no watermarks, and no daily task limit.

Are my files private?

Files are transferred over encrypted HTTPS, processed, and automatically deleted from our servers within minutes. Nothing is stored, shared, or used for anything else.

Can I batch convert multiple PSD files?

Yes. Upload as many PSD files as you need and convert them to WEBP in one run.
