AVIF vs HEIC: what changes when you convert

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) was introduced in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media (Google, Netflix, Mozilla) and is best known for maximum web compression — typically 50% smaller than jpg. HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container), created by the MPEG group; adopted by Apple in iOS 11, is the better choice when you need iphone camera photos (half the size of jpg at the same quality).

Why convert? HEIC files are usually larger than AVIF, but you gain iphone camera photos (half the size of jpg at the same quality). Most desktop image editors and older devices cannot open AVIF yet. Converting to HEIC solves that instantly.

Upload one file or a whole batch — conversion happens over a secure HTTPS connection and finished files are automatically deleted from our servers within minutes. HEIC photos from an iPhone routinely fail to open on Windows PCs and Android phones.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Quick answers about this PurePDF workflow.

How do I convert AVIF to HEIC?

Upload your AVIF files on this page. PurePDF opens the conversion workspace with HEIC preselected — click Convert and collect the finished files from the download hub.

Will converting AVIF to HEIC reduce quality?

HEIC uses lossy compression, so there is a small quality trade-off in exchange for a much smaller file. At the default quality setting the difference is invisible for photos and everyday images.

Is transparency preserved when converting AVIF to HEIC?

Yes. Both AVIF and HEIC support alpha transparency, so transparent backgrounds survive the conversion intact.

Can I convert an animated AVIF?

HEIC is a still-image format, so the first frame of the animation is converted. To keep motion, use a video format or keep the original.

Is the AVIF to HEIC converter free?

Yes — free with no signup, no watermarks, and no daily task limit.

Are my files private?

Files are transferred over encrypted HTTPS, processed, and automatically deleted from our servers within minutes. Nothing is stored, shared, or used for anything else.

Can I batch convert multiple AVIF files?

Yes. Upload as many AVIF files as you need and convert them to HEIC in one run.
